Standard
Machine Translation vs. Customized Machine Translation
| Customizing
the software can increase the accuracy of the translation
by using industry specific dictionaries, which are
included in the premium version and by building our own
customer specific dictionaries.
You can
also build a list of words you do not want translated, for
example, company names. |

What
is Machine Translation?
At SYSTRAN,
we define Machine Translation ("MT" or translation
software) as the translation of one human language into another
human language by computer. This definition considers the
grammatical structure of each language and uses rules and
assumptions to transfer the grammatical structure of the source
language (text to be translated) into the target language
(translated text). It should be noted that SYSTRAN's
MT systems are not intended to replace human translators, but
could be used as work enhancement tools in their work.
What other
milestones occurred SYSTRAN's earlier days?
SYSTRAN's
MT was used by NASA for the infamous joint US-USSR Apollo-Soyouz
space project during 1974-1975. This historic event paved
the way for Dr. Toma to demonstrate a prototype of English into
French MT to representatives of the Commission of the European
Communities (CEC). Soon after, SYSTRAN
was contracted by the CEC to develop MT systems for various
European language pairs. Today the CEC uses 17 SYSTRAN
MT systems for the translation of its internal communication.
When did SYSTRAN
begin to release translation software products for the average PC?
As time
progressed, SYSTRAN
continued to develop new MT systems for new language pairs and to
enhance existing language pairs, all on mainframe. In 1992, SYSTRAN
began the "C" conversion project, bringing its powerful,
patented MT technology to the every day desktop PC. SYSTRAN
PROfessional Premium for Windows in standalone and
client/server versions were launched in 1995.
Has SYSTRAN
continued to develop MT for the US intelligence community?
SYSTRAN
received a contract from the US National Air Intelligence Center
to develop several Eastern European MT language pairs, in 1996.
This included the first-ever Serbo-Croatian into English MT
system, already delivered to – and being used by - the US
Government.
Is SYSTRAN's
translation technology used in commercial applications?
In 1996, SYSTRAN
signed a licensing agreement with SEIKO Instruments, Inc., through
which SYSTRAN would provide
linguistic data and software for SEIKO's electronic hand-held
translation products. Late last year, SYSTRAN
combined with Electronic Arts, Origin Systems, Ultima Online: The
Second Age and introduced the first-ever online translation
capability in online gaming. SYSTRAN
succeeded in breaking the language barrier in yet another medium.
Which SYSTRAN
project has had the greatest impact on the global marketplace?
SYSTRAN
made history once again in late 1997 with the help of AltaVista's
Translation Service - BABELFISH - powered by SYSTRAN.
BABELFISH pushed MT awareness to the forefront of the Internet
community by offering any Internet user free real-time
translations of web content. Today, BABELFISH receives more
than 1,000,000 translation requests per day.
Which SYSTRAN
translation software product is for me?
Before
choosing a SYSTRAN product,
we suggest that you define your translation needs. Based on those
needs, you will be able to pick the appropriate product.
SYSTRAN offers translation
software products tailored for client/server and company intranet
use, corporate use, small / medium-sized businesses, and
easy-to-use translation products made especially for those with
basic translation needs that is affordable for everyone.
How many systems
has SYSTRAN developed over the past 30 years?
Today, 36
SYSTRAN MT language pairs
are commercially available, out of a total of 38 developed
systems. It should be noted that new language pairs and new
language combinations are always in development.
Why choose
SYSTRAN?
-
Unsurpassed translation engine.
- Unbeatable translation speed.
- Unmatched credibility.
All of SYSTRAN's MT systems
run on the same translation engine. SYSTRAN's
translation software products and services represent different
versions of the same engine.

It is so rare to find a company
