German Language Facts to Consider when Translating

The German language can be very different from English in the fact that German makes extensive use of inflectional endings on words. All nouns in German are capitalized and all nouns have a gender, masculine, feminine and neuter. The verb is inflected to show person, number, tense, and mood; and the subjunctive is often used.

You will find that the German language has very long compound words, in fact some German words can be as long as a short sentence in English.

The Roman alphabet is now exclusively used in written German. You will also notice that German is the only language in which all nouns are capitalized, common as well as proper. There is a closer relationship between German spelling and pronunciation than there is in English.

German Dialects

The modern standard German language form that we use today was developed by a number of writers back in the 18th century .  A corresponding norm for spoken High German, influenced by the written standard, is used in education, broadcasting, media and the theater.

German dialects that differ substantially from standard German, not only in pronunciation but also in grammar, are found in regions of Germany, E France, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein; Lėtzeburgesch, an official language of Luxembourg, is a German dialect spoken by about 400,000 people there. There are still differences in the dialects of High German and Low German in today's time. A big trend toward uniformity in the direction of the written standard is expected partly as a result of widespread broadcasting, diminishing isolation, and increased communication, even more now with the world wide web.

When Martin Luther (1483-1546) translated the Bible into Middle German it was a major contribution to the final victory of this dialect as a common German language. East Middle German formed the basis of the modern standard language we use in today's time.
