Special Note on CANADIAN French Dialect: If you are in the United States you will encounter "French Canadian" which is a dialect of the French language and is commonly found in the USA and Canada. Quebec which is a province of Canada is primarily made up of French speakers and there are attempts to make it the official language. You will hear the term "Canadian French" a lot to indicate the dialect of this region of Canada. Since the USA and Canada are very close in proximity we encounter this dialect a lot. There are many requests for a "Canadian French translation" software and you can easily tailor Systran's translator to handle the terms that are unique to this dialect. This is true with any dialect, you can train the software to override the default terms in the dictionary. To understand the differences in dialects compare it to the difference in British and American English, speakers can easily understand the language but there are some minor differences. For example, in Britain you will see the word "colour" and in America you see the same word spelled differently as "color". French Grammar and Accents over the Letters Many languages use gender and the French language is no exception. In French LE is masculine and LA is Feminine. Working with the French language and genders is a constant headache for students of French. When trying to figure out the gender it is best to look for patterns in suffixes and word endings - certain endings can tend to indicate masculine nouns, while other endings indicate feminine nouns. There are three accents over vowels in French, the acute (´) over e, the grave (`) over a and e, and the circumflex (ˆ) over a, e, i, o, and u. The accent can indicate the pronunciation of a vowel, distinguish homonyms, or mark the discarding of the letter s from a word. A cedilla placed under the letter c (ç) indicates that the c is pronounced as s. Ordinarily, c is pronounced as k before a, o, u, or a consonant and as s before e and i.
